No retailer enjoys the thought of losing trust among shoppers, and especially over a credit card fraud issue. If your business is a target for fraud, and you are not compliant, you are at risk to not only losing your payment acceptance, but your customers trust, too. Fraud is a top issue for the credit card industry. It’s estimated that credit card companies lose more than $1 billion each year to fraud. The Payment Card Industry (PCI) Security Standards Council (an organization formed by five major brands – Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express, Japan Card), has created the PCI Data Security Standard (DSS) to help merchants protect customer data.
Any merchant or service provider that stores, processes or transmits customer account data must comply with the PCI DSS controls and processes. If you don’t, you risk costly fines, audit costs, restrictions or worse should a breach occur.
